Structure AI (previously AI Structure)īesides a new name, AI Structure received a quality update. Now, Face light better recognizes faces and more accurately applies the filter. Face AI (previously AI Portrait Enhancer) Admittedly, you still need to move a few sliders to adjust the settings, but that’s not too difficult. You just pick an image of a sky, and Luminar will automatically mask it in for you. While this would take a lot of time masking and applying filters in Photoshop, this tool does it in a second. Previously known as AI Sky Replacement, this tool was and still is capable of swapping the sky in your photos. In the section of Updated tools, you’ll find every tool that has an improved functionality but a different name. With Bokeh being a desirable quality of every portrait, this tool will be a game-changer for amateur portrait photographers. Of all the new tools of Luminar AI, I am the most excited about Bokeh AI. Bokeh AI (coming soon)Īs the name suggests, Bokeh AI will be capable of producing beautiful bokeh. Although not all that useful, you can change iris colour or even swap it for owl or cat eyes. Not only can you improve iris visibility and shine, but also its appearance. Iris AI takes this to a whole another level. In Luminar 4, we saw the Eye Enhancer tool that added some sparks to eyes. However, I believe that this tool will be a welcome addition to selfies and portraits. I, for one, dislike changing body shapes. Body AIīody AI is a brand-new tool that changes the shape of bodies. He named the hominin Pithecanthropus erectus (erect ape-man), which has now been reclassified as Homo erectus. Between 18 Dubois discovered remains that he later described as "an intermediate species between humans and monkeys". The search for a fossil that connected man and ape was unproductive until the Dutch paleontologist Eugene Dubois went to Indonesia. Haeckel argued that humans were closely related to the primates of Southeast Asia and rejected Darwin's hypothesis of human origins in Africa. He believed that Lemuria was the home of the first humans and that Asia was the home of many of the earliest primates he thus supported that Asia was the cradle of hominid evolution. He theorized that the missing link was to be found on the lost continent of Lemuria located in the Indian Ocean. Haeckel claimed the origin of humanity was to be found in Asia. Haeckel claimed that human evolution occurred in 24 stages and that the 23rd stage was a theoretical missing link he named Pithecanthropus alalus ("ape-man lacking speech"). While the vertebrates were then seen as forming a sort of evolutionary sequence, the various classes were distinct, the undiscovered intermediate forms being called "missing links". After Darwin's On the Origin of Species, the idea of "lower animals" representing earlier stages in evolution lingered, as demonstrated in Ernst Haeckel's figure of the human pedigree. In his view, lower animals were simply newcomers on the evolutionary scene. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck envisioned that life is generated in the form of the simplest creatures constantly, and then strive towards complexity and perfection (i.e. Haeckel's Chain of the Animal Ancestors of Man Historical beliefs about the missing link Subsequently, Charles Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, and Ernst Haeckel used it in their works with this meaning. "Missing link" later became a name for transitional fossils, particularly those seen as bridging the gulf between man and animal. The first time it was used as a name for transitional types between different taxa was in 1863, in Lyell's Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man. Charles Lyell employed the term a few years later in 1851 in his third edition of Elements of Geology too as a metaphor for the missing gaps in the continuity of the geological column. The earliest publication that explicitly uses the term “missing link” was in 1844 in Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation by Robert Chambers, which uses the term in an evolutionary context relating to gaps in the fossil record. The very idea of an ordering of organisms, even if supposedly fixed, laid the basis for the idea of transmutation of species, for example Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Radical thinkers like Jean-Baptiste Lamarck saw a progression of life forms from the simplest creatures striving towards complexity and perfection, a schema accepted by zoologists like Henri de Blainville. The dual nature of the chain, divided yet united, had always allowed for seeing creation as essentially one continuous whole, with the potential for overlap between the links. It was during the 18th century that the set nature of species and their immutable place in the great chain was questioned. God was at the top of the chain followed by man and then animals. Influenced by Aristotle's theory of higher and lower animals, the Great Chain of Being was created during the Medieval period in Europe and was strongly influenced by religious thought. The term "missing link" was influenced by the 18th-century Enlightenment thinkers such as Alexander Pope and Jean-Jacques Rousseau who thought of humans as links in the Great Chain of Being, a hierarchical structure of all matter and life. The scarcity of transitional fossils can be attributed to the incompleteness of the fossil record. Instead, last common ancestor is preferred since this does not have the connotation of linear evolution, as evolution is a branching process. However, it has fallen out of favor with anthropologists because it implies the evolutionary process is a linear phenomenon and that forms originate consecutively in a chain. The term "missing link" has been supported by geneticists since evolutionary trees only have data at the tips and nodes of their branches the rest is inference and not evidence of fossils. ![]() Endless references, careful analysis, speculative psychiatry, numerous anecdotes, and annotations you actually want ot read are all present to give you an idea of how Diogenes was not only fascinating, but very important. What incredible freedom Diogenes possessed!ĭiogenes was a fascinating figure, and Navia's book does its best to hammer this into your mind. What a great spot to be in! To be so good at what you do, you can pretty much say anything and still get away with it. In either case, even his enemies didn't want to put him away because he was such an amazing guy, and even THEY wouldn't dream of silencing his excellence. Or maybe just the fact that he practiced what he preached was enough. Even his most bitter critics must have admired this man simply because of his incredible wit and his fearlessness in the face of both natural and manmade adversity. Yet, the extreme nature of Diogenes was enough to actually earn him respect. I keep comparing Diogenes to Michael Savage, although Michael Savage isn't near as extreme. Maybe we need more of this kind of philosophy in the world today. ![]() Your next best option would probably be to follow the example of Diogenes, the man that showed us what may prove to be the best path to freedom the world has to offer.īy having nothing to take away, Diogenes had little to fear from causing a ruckus, and was able and willing to speak his mind without too much thought to the consequences. Suppose, like most people, you don't have a very good shot at being the ruler of the entire world. Read and practice these profound teachings and get off the treadmill of what the education system and society call civilization. Navia has done a brilliant job in bringing the life, thought and practices of Diogenes to life. There is an honesty about Diogenes of Sinope that is refreshing. Diogenes, on the other hand is concerned with life as it is lived right now and not airy fairy fantasies that are designed to avoid facing reality. Navia makes it clear that philosophy that is almost solely intellectual does not fulfill our spiritual needs. Years ago when I read Plato, I wondered why his philosophy was so unsatisfying. They both look inward at our actions, attitudes and behaviors in order to embrace reality. I see a similarity between Diogenes and Zen practice. Diogenes does the exact opposite by embracing poverty and suffering in order to overcome them. He exposes so called civilization that seeks after riches, fame, comfort and pleasure. Diogenes continues this approach to living more fully. Socrates said "The unexamined life is not worth living". He is trying to paint a clear picture, and not write a hagography If there is something that is unclear or unknown about Diogenes, Navia let's his readers know. Luis E Navia has written a remarkable book on Diogenes of Sinope. It includes an extensively annotated translation of Diogenes Laertius's biography of Diogenes and a comprehensive bibliography. The book provides abundant references to ancient testimonies and modern scholarship. Navia emphasizes the vast difference between Diogenes' ideas and style of life on the one hand and, on the other, what is nowadays called cynicism. In Chapter 5, the influence of Diogenes is discussed. Chapter 4 reconstructs the philosophy of Diogenes by identifying twelve principles of his thought. This process involves complex psychological, sociological, and philosophical factors, chief among which was Socrates' influence on Diogenes through the agency of Antisthenes. Chapter 3 clarifies the roots and basis of the Cynic metamorphosis, that is, the process by which Diogenes transformed himself into a dog. ![]() This "war against the world," as Navia describes it, especially the rhetoric of Cynicism, was the primary medium used by the Cynics to convey their message. In Chapter 2, the practice of Cynicism, as exemplified by Diogenes, is elucidated. Chapter 1 provides a biographical sketch of Diogenes constructed on the basis of ancient testimonies. Navia undertakes the task of reconstructing Diogenes' life and extracting from him lessons that are valuable in our time. In this comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and engaging book, philosopher Luis E. Among them, the most important and distinctive was Diogenes of Sinope, who became the archetype of Classical Cynicism. For over eight hundred years, philosophers―men and women―who called themselves Cynics, literally "dogs" in their language, roamed the streets and byways of the Hellenistic world, teaching strange ideas and practicing a bizarre way of life. ![]() something a little more complicated, but that's effectively Space Chimps 2 in a nutshell. Oh, and Jane Lynch turns up voicing a scientist. After accidentally launching himself into orbit and meeting up with alien buddy Kilowatt (voiced by Laura Bailey), which might be the most annoying sidekick character created in the last decade, and bopping around the planet for a while, he returns to Earth to help Ham, Titan (Warburton), Luna (Hines) and Houston (Carlos Alazraqui) reclaim Mission Control from the clutches of alien menace Zartog (voiced by John DiMaggio). The plot, such as it is (the film runs but a scant 76 minutes), concerns Comet (voiced by Zack Shada), a technical assistant who yearns to visit Malgor, the planet discovered in the first film, but who is deleted from the flight manifesto because of budget cuts. But was it something in Rob Moreland's screenplay that totally dazzled the returning actors (he co-wrote the first Space Chimps)? Or does Andy Samberg just employ better lawyers? Whatever the reason, the character of Ham, originally voiced by Samberg, is given life by Tom Kenny here. ![]() I mean, I understand that a sequel was inevitable, particularly since Space Chimps effectively doubled its budget at the box office. What amazes me even more than the fact that there's a sequel to Space Chimps is that the filmmakers somehow managed to get three of the main actors from the first film - Stanley Tucci, Cheryl Hines and Patrick Warburton - to return here. Lucky, lucky me - and how thoughtful of director John H. Fortunately for me, the straight-to-DVD sequel Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back recaps almost every major development from the previous film before the plot of this second installment gets going. It might have something to do with the fact that I'm neither five years old or starved for entertainment that actively insults my intelligence, but even when I happen to stumble upon the film on HBO, I can't change the channel fast enough. I'll admit it up front: somehow, in all my movie-watching, I missed the cinematic glory that is 2008's Space Chimps. Filters respond fast and presets are easy to find and apply.
